One of the best ways to improve your diet is to prepare and eat more meals at home. Below are some tips to help you with menu planning and preparing quick and easy meals.
- Start with a list of meals your family enjoys. Take 30 seconds to list as many favorites as you can think of. Chances are, you’ll think of at least 5-7 meals.
- Write the ingredients that are needed for these meals. Cross off the items you already have in your pantry, refrigerator, or freezer.
- Remember to add fruits, vegetables, and whole grains where possible. A good visual rule of thumb is to have about ¼ of your plate be a grain, ¼ a protein, and ½ vegetables or fruit.
- Compare ads before shopping to see where you can get the best deal on the items you need to purchase. Use coupons to maximize your dollar where possible.
- Prepare in advance foods that are easily stored. For example, cook freshly purchased hamburger and freeze until use. That way, it only needs to be thawed and added to your recipe. This can greatly reduce time spent cooking meals. Another example, chop fresh vegetables as soon as you get home from the store, instead of waiting until just before the meal.
- Place a list of your meals in a convenient location, such as on the refrigerator. This way, everyone in the household will know what is for dinner and can help prepare if you aren’t available on a given day.
